Keyser Soze is high!

10am this morning, Keyser was wandering around the house crying and randomly stopping to strain to pee. He couldn't do it. He would squat for 5-10min with unbreakable concentration and couldn't pee. Around 11am it was clear he was really having trouble. I gave him the left over meds from the last time he had bladder issues. Diazepam and Prednisolone. They didn't help. Eventually he started walking funny. He didn't want to be touched. Then he simply stopped moving. Mid step. He was walking into the kitchen and just froze. He probably stood like that for 10 minutes before he took a couple of steps and froze again. Eventually he made it to the bathroom where he spread out on the scale and froze again. He wouldn't move. Around 1pm we decided to take him in. Since it is Sunday no vets were open. We had to take him to emergency care. They took x-rays and found his bladder was completely full and no matter how much they palpitated it he still wouldn't/couldn't pee. He was obviously obstructed. They made a plan. They would put him under and give him a catheter. This should push back the obstruction. They would then flush his bladder which would remove the obstruction and any crystals/debris that may cause another issue. They would then give him another cath to leave in over night and then transfer him to a near by vet in the morning. They would test his blood for kidney issues (and other issues) and test his urine for infection etc.

We arrived home around 5pm and started eating dinner. Around 6:45pm they called to tell us he dislodged the blockage without a catheter and had peed an entire bladders worth in his kennel. The plan then changed to simply testing the urine and blood. However, Keyser was sick, angry and still in pain so they had to put him under for the blood tests. At 7:30pm they called to tell us the results. He has a bladder infection and he had extremely elevated urine glucose levels. This is usually a sign of diabetes. So they tested him for that as well. It came back negative for diabetes. They actually didn't believe it because his levels had been so high and so they got a fresh sample and ran it again. In the new sample his glucose levels were significantly lower (although still too high) which means the levels were caused by stress. Then they just needed to let him come out of his anesthesia. We were able to pick him up around 9pm and they gave him antibiotics to take home and a shot of IV fluid under his skin to increase urine production.

Boy did it work. He peed on the towel in his kennel on the way out of the back room, so they put a pee pad in with him, which he peed all over, and all over himself, as they walked into the waiting room. The nurse went to get another pee pad and we pulled him out of the kennel. He flipped out. He thought we were taking him back into the back room and flailed to get out of our hands and run to the other side of the room. Once we had the new pee pad in the kennel he was very happy to climb back inside. We were on our way. He peed in the kennel yet again on our way home from the vet and naturally his kennel went straight into the bathroom when we got home. He was pissed. He has never fought a bath like he did tonight. Once clean, we let him wander the house. He is so high he keeps turning his head a lot and checking out the house like it is brand new. He wants to play and eat and won't stop walking around. It is actually scaring Kobi. She is currently hiding from him and hissed at him when he came too close to her. She doesn't know what to think of her drugged up brother.


He'll now be on a better PH balancing diet which will include more chicken protein, very little (if any) fish and mostly wet food. Even though his issues are mostly stress induce, perhaps the new diet will help his body fight off the PH changes and inflammation cause by his stress. It's been a long day and I didn't accomplish anything I planned to (except make an amazing broccoli cheddar soup). Keyser seems to be very happy to be home and is currently just staring at the wall by his empty food dish. He's still hungry but we aren't supposed to give him more than half a can of food tonight because of all his drugs.
